Cosmetology Apprenticeship

Shy Watters Hair Studio offers a comprehensive Cosmetology Apprenticeship program in the state of Maryland. This apprenticeship provides individuals with a rewarding opportunity to gain real-world experience in the field of cosmetology, while also saving approximately $25,000 or more compared to traditional cosmetology school tuition fees. Our program not only equips apprentices with the necessary skills and knowledge but also instills professionalism, punctuality, enthusiasm, creativity and a strong work ethic.

Standard Requirements:

1. Age and Education: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.


2. Cosmetology Interest: Prospective apprentices should have a genuine interest in the field of cosmetology. Examples are as follows, but not limited to: hairstyling, cutting, coloring, makeup, and other related services.


3. Maryland State Licensure: To participate in the apprenticeship, individuals must acquire a Maryland State Cosmetology Apprentice License. We can guide you through the process and provide support to obtain this license.


4. Availability: Apprentices must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as per the salon's needs.

Salon Requirements of Professionalism:

1. Appearance: Apprentices are expected to maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times. This includes well-groomed hair, clean and appropriate attire, and adherence to salon-specific uniform requirements.


2. Professional Behavior: Apprentices must conduct themselves in a professional manner when interacting with clients, colleagues, and salon staff. This includes being respectful, courteous, and maintaining client confidentiality.


3. Customer Service: Providing excellent customer service is essential in the cosmetology industry. Apprentices

should strive to meet and exceed client expectations by actively listening, offering professional advice, and ensuring a positive salon experience.


4. Communication Skills: Effective communication is crucial for successful interactions with clients and fellow team members. Apprentices should possess strong verbal and written communication skills, actively listen, and clarify any doubts or concerns promptly.


5. Hygiene and Sanitation: Maintaining a clean and sanitary work environment is of utmost importance in the salon. Apprentices are expected to adhere to proper hygiene practices, follow sanitation protocols, and comply with

health and safety regulations.

1. Punctuality: Apprentices must arrive on time for their scheduled shifts and appointments. Being punctual demonstrates professionalism and respect for both clients and colleagues.


2. Enthusiasm and Initiative: Displaying enthusiasm for learning, taking initiative, and embracing new challenges is highly valued. Apprentices should actively seek opportunities to expand their skills, stay updated with industry trends, and contribute to the salon's success.


3. Work Ethic: Having a strong work ethic is essential for success in the cosmetology field. Apprentices should demonstrate dedication, reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

The Shy Watters Hair Studio Cosmetology Apprenticeship in Maryland State offers aspiring cosmetologists an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience while saving a significant amount of money. By meeting the standard requirements and embodying professionalism, punctuality, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic, apprentices can develop the skills and confidence necessary for a successful career in the cosmetology industry.


Cosmetology Apprentice shall engage in a minimum of 20 hours per week for a period of 24 months to be eligible to take the State Board of Cosmetologist Licensing Examination. Participants will receive cosmetology training, a series of checkpoint assessment including theorem and practical, and the opportunity to join the salon team upon completion.  

Internship Program 

The Shy Watters Beauty and Business Internship has been thoughtfully crafted to provide young individuals with a truly transformative experience, enriching them with a wealth of knowledge that is poised to significantly impact both their educational journey and future professional endeavors. This intricately designed internship program is dedicated to empowering its participants through a series of carefully curated experiences, each geared towards unveiling their unique specializations, fostering unshakeable confidence, and meticulously refining their skillset to ensure a comprehensive and holistic development. This transformative journey is not merely about acquiring surface-level insights but delves deep into the intricacies of the beauty and business domains, offering valuable insights that serve as a solid foundation for their personal and professional growth

Interns will have the chance to gain firsthand, real-world experience within a professional salon environment, working alongside esteemed industry professionals as they cater to a diverse clientele. Throughout the internship, participants will actively interact with both industry experts and the clientele, fostering direct engagement that enhances their learning and professional development.

  • Age: Minimum age of 13 years (parent/guardian permission required).


  • Hours: Internship duration is set at 100 hours over a 10-week period, with a maximum of 90 days from the start date to complete the internship.


  • Weekly Evaluations: We will be assessing your professionalism, punctuality, communication skills, willingness to learn, and positive attitude.


  • Weekly Assessments: Along with the technical aspects of the internship, participants will be given a series of short answer questions.


  • Resume: Submitting a portfolio or resume showcasing any relevant skills, experiences, or projects would be highly beneficial.


  • References: Providing references from academic or professional sources can strengthen your application.
